Walter Reed’s Kate Sullivan on How to Set Up a Brain Fitness Center to Enhance Cognitive Retraining and Rehabilitation
Kate Sullivan will run an educational workshop on How to Set Up a Brain Fitness Center to Enhance Cognitive Retraining and Rehabilitation, at the upcoming 2012 SharpBrains Virtual Summit (June 7–14th, 2012).
Description: Learn the nuts and bolts of opening a rehab-oriented “brain fitness center”, including staffing, measurement of behavioral/ cognitive outcomes, selection and rollout of interventions, and integration of center-based with home-based use. Learn the obstacles and tips for replicating such a center in a satellite location.
- Participants will gain insight into conceptualizing their own computer-based rehabilitative environment as an educational/library experience, a gym, a clinical tool, or a research project.
- Participants will learn about the essential resources needed to launch a “brain fitness center”, from identifying an appropriate patient population to program marketing.
- Participants will determine how to set clinical expectations by determining if the goal of your Center is to enhance normal cognition, maintain or slow down decline or remediate impaired cognition.
- Participants will be able to determine appropriate intervention tools based on the population served, staff availability, patient participation and patient motivation.
- Participants will receive an overview of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s Brain Fitness Center to include research and lessons learned.
Kate Sullivan, M.S., CCC-SLP, CBIS, is the Director of the Brain Fitness Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison University. She has been a speech-language pathologist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for 10 years where she recently helped launch the Brain Fitness Center (BFC), located in the WRAMC’s Military Advanced Training Center, to complement traditional care approaches.
