App With a Mind For Improving Transportation Safety (The Wall Street Journal):

A team of scientists from Indonesia has come up with a novel way to improve transportation safety in their country through a mobile app that scans transport operators’ brain waves and combines it with data on weather, vehicle and traffic conditions to help reduce accidents.

To acquire the brain wave data, the app – known as the Integrated Traffic System (ITS) – uses sensors fitted into a U.S.-made Neurosky headset that the user wears like a fitness band. The ITS then…scans a user’s brain waves and sends a report to the app with information ranking factors such as awareness, stress and oxygen levels. It then delivers an assessment of the operator’s driving ability. “You’re sharp and very good to go,” reads one evaluation.

The app remains in the beta phase, but it has recently captured the attention of mobile developers at the Mobile World Congress in Spain.”
