Brain Health centers adding cognitive coaching services
Brain Health Center expands services (San Francisco Chronicle):
“…Now, the services the medical team provides will be expanded at the new Brain Health Center, which opened last month at CPMC’s Davies campus in San Francisco. The center, made possible by an anonymous $21 million donation that established an endowment, offers patients with neurodegenerative problems and their families a large, dedicated place where their medical and emotional needs can be met…The hope is that the center will be more than the place where patients come to see their doctor or where research takes place. Its care navigation team is there to guide patients and their caregivers through the gamut that comes with a neurodegenerative disease diagnosis… Staff members offer counseling services and encourage the “worried well” — people who are concerned that they may be showing early signs of neurodegenerative problems or have family histories — to come in for evaluations.
One program offered at the center is cognitive coaching, in which counselors work with patients to assess what skills they have and how to build a strategy to get the most out of those skills. Similar programs exist elsewhere, but insurance may not cover them. At the Brain Health Center, the costs are partially paid for out of the endowment.”
