Imagine a videogame cleared by the FDA to treat ADHD, depression, or substance abuse — how will doctors prescribe it, patients access it, and insurers pay for it?

Imagine a free “annual brain check-up” — what may it look like, and how can it lead into personalized interventions to improve function and prevent/ delay/ treat cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s Disease?

Imagine being responsible for the health & wellness of a million people — how will you educate them to navigate most-likely-to-help interventions, such as breathing/ exercise/ meditation/ apps/ biofeedback/ tDCS to regulate stress?

Imagine investing $100 million in startups developing noninvasive, digital neurotechnologies — where, and how, will you find great opportunities to generate financial and social returns?

The 2018 SharpBrains Virtual Summit (December 4–6th, 2018)  will feature over forty of the world’s top experts, innovators and investors aiming to improve brain health and performance for all in light of growing neuroscience and digital tech.

Mindstrong Health identifies digital biomarkers of cognitive function using smartphone data

April 13, 2018 by SharpBrains

___

mHealth Research on Mental Health Taps Into One’s Tapping Habits (mHealth Intelligence):

“Healthcare providers looking to use mHealth in behavioral health treatment have long struggled to make the technology unobtrusive. But recent research suggests that remote monitoring of people with mental health issues could be done by analyzing their smartphone habits.

A recent report in the journal NPJ Digital Medicine suggests that a smartphone app that collects user activity in the background can help telemental healthcare providers measure that user’s daily habits and detect when those habits deviate. By combining [Read more…] about Mindstrong Health identifies digital biomarkers of cognitive function using smartphone data

May e‑newsletter: MIT Solve launches Brain Health Challenge, asking “How can every person improve their brain health and mental resilience?”

May 25, 2017 by SharpBrains

—–

Time for SharpBrains’ May e‑newsletter, highlighting what’s new in brain health and mental performance, and featuring a very relevant MIT initiative and a thought-provoking study on the “Cognitive Divide.”

New thinking

  • MIT Solve launches Brain Health Challenge: How can every person improve their brain health and mental resilience?
  • Mental Health Innovation and Dr. Tom Insel: from the NIMH to Google/ Verily Life Sciences to Startup Mindstrong
  • Five reasons the future of brain enhancement is digital, pervasive and (hopefully) bright (related slides here)
  • Eight research teams working with DARPA to discover best ways to activate neuroplasticity and accelerate learning
  • Researchers propose four “neurorights” to harness neurotechnology for good: cognitive liberty, mental privacy, mental integrity, and psychological continuity

New research

  • Is modernity leading to a growing Cognitive Divide?
  • Physically-active video games (‘exergames’) boost cognition more than physical activity alone
  • Common medication treatments for PTSD can increase the risk of developing dementia
  • Study identifies brain circuits enabling four-year-olds to “put themselves in other people’s shoes”

New tools

  • Want a music system that lifts you up when you’re feeling down? Meet this audio headset with bio-signal sensors (NeuroSky patent)
  • Evaluating neural responses via EEG brain data in virtual reality environments (Nielsen patent)
  • Connecting cardiological and neurological health (Medtronic patent)
  • Start-up Aira raises $12M, showing the way for cognitive science and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the lives of blind and low vision individuals

Have a great month of June and, for those based in the US, a great Memorial Day weekend,

The SharpBrains Team

Why “Untrained Brains Are A Bit Like Puppies,” And How To Put Together the Building Blocks of a Smarter, Happier Mind

April 26, 2017 by Amy Blankson

—

As a child, I was convinced that my dad just went to work to play. My father was a neuroscientist at Baylor University, and his office was full of brightly colored blocks to test intelligence, books by MC Escher to study perception, and even a soundproof room covered in blue foam that I thought was for gymnastics [Read more…] about Why “Untrained Brains Are A Bit Like Puppies,” And How To Put Together the Building Blocks of a Smarter, Happier Mind
