New report: Empowering 8 Billion Minds via Ethical Development and Adoption of Neurotechnologies

July 5, 2019 by SharpBrains

Empowering 8 Billion Minds: Enabling Better Mental Health for All via the Ethical Adoption of Technologies from WEF GFC on Neurotechnologies on Vimeo.

A new report (opens PDF) created by the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Neurotechnologies, Empowering 8 Billion Minds: Enabling Better Mental Health for All via the Ethical Adoption of Technologies, proposes a framework to address privacy, trust and governance issues in the use of technologies for mental healthcare.

Mental health disorders are among the leading causes of mortality and could cost the global economy $16 trillion by 2030. By collecting and analysing data to inform treatment, it is easier for more people to access information and engage with professionals. While technologies, including smartphones, wearable sensors and artificial intelligence, are successfully meeting the current gaps in care, there are risks [Read more…] about New report: Empowering 8 Billion Minds via Ethical Development and Adoption of Neurotechnologies

Dear reader,

It’s time for SharpBrains e‑newsletter discussing the latest research and innovations to help promote brain health, opening in this occasion with a large and worrying study tracking the long-term neural impact of commonly prescribed medications.

New brain research:

  • First, do no harm? Common anticholinergic meds seen to increase dementia risk
  • …which is one of the many reasons why these 10 highlights from the 2019 SharpBrains Virtual Summit are so important to shape a better system and future
  • New study reinforces the importance of walking through forests for mental and general health
  • AARP: A majority of Americans believe dietary supplements improve brain health, despite the lack of evidence

New brain technology:

  • The Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) announces six new ONtrepreneurs working at the frontier of applied neurotech
  • Monitoring the body’s electrical signalling to enhance brain health
  • Few wearable neurotechnologies have been directly tested by high-quality, peer-reviewed research

New brain thinking:

  • Watch all Recordings from the 2019 SharpBrains Virtual Summit
  • July 9th in Toronto, Canada: Latest research findings on Neuroplasticity and Neuropsychology
  • Kindle Countdown Deal to read over the summer (and apply!) a great book on brain health and neuro-fitness
  • People spent $1.9 billion last year on apps to keep their brains sharp as they age — here’s what actually works

Last but not least, here is a fun brain teaser for the weekend.  What do you see?

Have a great month of July,

Our new report is making the media rounds…

Reuters: Brain technology patents soar as companies get inside people’s heads

From ways to eavesdrop on brains and learn what advertisements excite consumers, to devices that alleviate depression, the number of U.S. patents awarded for “neurotechnology” has soared since 2010, according to an analysis released on Wednesday.

“Neurotech has gone well beyond medicine, with non-medical corporations, often under the radar, developing neurotechnologies to enhance work and life,” Alvaro Fernandez said.
