September 17th @ UC Berkeley: Disrupting neurodegenerative diseases

August 28, 2019 by Alvaro Fernandez

__________

Quick heads-up about a great event next month for those based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • When: Tuesday, September 17, 2019 / 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM PDT
  • Where: Pauley Ballroom, UC Berkeley
  • What: 2019 UC Berkeley Aging Research & Technology Summit: Disrupting Neurodegenerative Diseases

Alzheimer’s and neurodegenerative diseases are critical health and financial burdens on patients, families, and societies in this country and around the world. Through Medicare and Medicaid, the US government is spending $200B this year on care and support, and that is projected to reach $1Trillion by 2050. 5.8M people are directly affected in this country, among 44M worldwide, largely cared for by untrained family members — many of whom are forced to leave the paid workforce to provide such care. These numbers are expected to at least double by 2040.

The Summit will present innovative research, interventions and technology solutions that are emerging to address the challenges of a wide array of neurodegenerative diseases. The goal of the Summit is to promote and present cutting edge research and technology innovation from across UC Berkeley and our sister UC campuses, showcasing advances that will disrupt the way individuals, clinicians, providers, and society addresses the impact of diverse neurodegenerative diseases. At the same time, the Summit will expose students and key stakeholders alike to innovative, scientific, evidence-based research into lifestyle factors that are effective in postponing the onset of dementia.
