My take on the use of nutritional supplements is that they mostly provide little benefit for those who are healthy”

Robert Bilder

Question by Emi and Joan Cooper:
The SharpBrains Guide is quite critical on the use of ginkgo and supplements to maximize brain health and improve memory. What is your own take? Do you use any supplements? What do you advice others? Also, what is the impact of too much sugar consume on our brains?

Answer by Dr. Bob Bilder:
My take on the use of nutritional supplements is that they mostly provide little benefit for those who are healthy (which is most of us). There are clearly adverse effects of nutritional deficiencies but those are pretty uncommon at least in much of the developed world. I do not use any supplements myself, and I advise others to be cautious because the nutritional supplement marketplace is relatively unregulated, so vendors tend to make exaggerated claims that are not backed up by any scientific evidence.
