Brain Health centers adding cognitive coaching services

Brain Health Cen­ter expands ser­vices (San Fran­cis­co Chronicle):

“…Now, the ser­vices the med­ical team pro­vides will be expand­ed at the new Brain Health Cen­ter, which opened last month at CPM­C’s Davies cam­pus in San Fran­cis­co. The cen­ter, made pos­si­ble by an anony­mous $21 mil­lion dona­tion that estab­lished an endow­ment, offers patients with neu­rode­gen­er­a­tive prob­lems and their fam­i­lies a large, ded­i­cat­ed place where their med­ical and emo­tion­al needs can be met…The hope is that the cen­ter will be more than the place where patients come to see their doc­tor or where research takes place. Its care nav­i­ga­tion team is there to guide patients and their care­givers through the gamut that comes with a neu­rode­gen­er­a­tive dis­ease diag­no­sis… Staff mem­bers offer coun­sel­ing ser­vices and encour­age the “wor­ried well” — peo­ple who are con­cerned that they may be show­ing ear­ly signs of neu­rode­gen­er­a­tive prob­lems or have fam­i­ly his­to­ries — to come in for evaluations.

One pro­gram offered at the cen­ter is cog­ni­tive coach­ing, in which coun­selors work with patients to assess what skills they have and how to build a strat­e­gy to get the most out of those skills. Sim­i­lar pro­grams exist else­where, but insur­ance may not cov­er them. At the Brain Health Cen­ter, the costs are par­tial­ly paid for out of the endowment.”
