The Neurotechnology Revolution

Tuesday, September 29, 2015   12–1.30pm

A collaboration between

Potomac Institute for Policy Studies and SharpBrains

Description: Revolutions in neurotechnology will soon influence every aspect of human life. Neurotechnology can be used to further understand the natural processes of the brain, study and treat neurological disorders and injuries, and enhance neural capabilities, resulting in increased human intelligence and efficiency. Outside of the realm of health, it can be used in social contexts to improve overall quality of life. Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs), imaging capabilities, cognitive load and wearable technologies have all improved rapidly and are being applied in multiple fields; thousands of related patents have been filed.

This seminar will zoom in the main opportunities and challenges presented by this rapid transformation, based on The Potomac Institute’s recent publication, Trends in Neurotechnology, a compilation of information from literature review, seminars, and discussions with experts, and SharpBrains’ latest market report, Pervasive Neurotechnology: A Groundbreaking Analysis of 10,000+ Patent Filings Transforming Medicine, Health, Entertainment, and Business, which provides extensive quantitative evidence for the rise in non-invasive neurotechnologies both within and outside the realm of medicine.

The seminar will host distinguished speakers and participants from the neurotechnology industry, policy makers, researchers and users of neurotechnology and neuroscience-based innovation. By bringing together researchers, innovators and users involved in neurotechnology alongside policymakers and legislators, we hope to provoke a lively discussion from which novel policy ideas for the successful development and implementation of neurotechnology will emerge, helping harness the tremendous potential in ways that actively benefit society.

To RSVP: Cameras and media must be registered. For registration and general RSVPs, please send name, title and affiliation to Brian Barnett at bbarnett at potomacinstitute dot org.

Speakers

JennBuss (1)Dr. Jennifer Buss, Assistant Vice President of Science and Technology at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, oversees the contract work and personnel in the S&T Policy Division at the Potomac Institute, managing a variety of OSD programs including an outreach effort for the Department of Defense to the start-up community across the country to find innovative technologies to meet the challenges faced by the Services and Government agencies. She performs science and technology trends analysis and recommends policy. Additionally, Dr. Buss is the Director of the Center for Neurotechnology Studies (CNS) at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, a center dedicated to ascribing meaningful policy solutions to one of the most influential science and technologies of our time. Dr. Buss earned a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Maryland Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Dr. Buss received her BS in biochemistry with a minor in mathematics from the University of Delaware.

Alvaro Fernandez

Alvaro Fernandez, named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, runs SharpBrains, an independent market research firm tracking how neuroscience and neurotechnology can improve health and performance across the lifespan.
